What does a foundation actually do?

01
The idea

Soil is weak. Spread the load.

A column would punch straight into the ground. A wide footing spreads the same load over more soil.

Play with it

Keep the soil happy

Make the footing wider or narrower, and change the load from the building above.

N column load900kN
B footing width1.2m
p soil pressure (max 200)625kPa
Column load 900 kN on a 1.2 m square footing. Soil pressure 625 kPa, limit 200. The soil gives way.N = 900 kNB = 1.2 mfirm clay · takes 200 kPaTHE SOIL GIVES WAY
Try this · 0/3Stop the soil giving wayHold the heaviest loadFind the smallest footing for the starting load
03
The rule

Pressure = load ÷ area

Square footing
p=NB2≤qsoilp = \dfrac{\force{N}}{\len{B}^2} \le q_{\text{soil}}
So the width you need
B≥Nqsoil\len{B} \ge \sqrt{\dfrac{\force{N}}{q_{\text{soil}}}}

Real footings also check settlement, the footing's own weight and the concrete itself. This is the first check, and the one that sets the size.

Size the footing for 900 kN

To do

The soil takes 200 kPa. Pick a square footing that holds without wasting concrete.

N column load900kN
B footing width1.2m
p soil pressure (max 200)?kPa
Column load 900 kN on a 1.2 m square footing. Soil pressure 625 kPa, limit 200. The soil gives way.N = 900 kNB = 1.2 mfirm clay · takes 200 kPaTHE SOIL GIVES WAY

How hard does this footing press?

To do

A square footing 1.5 m\len{1.5}\,\mathrm{m} wide carries 450 kN\force{450}\,\mathrm{kN}. What pressure does it put on the soil?

A square footing 6 ft\len{6}\,\mathrm{ft} wide carries 144 kip\force{144}\,\mathrm{kip}. What pressure does it put on the soil?

kPa
